A first-class fund-raiser in Alcester

AN ALCESTER postman delivered more than just letters to the people of the town last weekend when he waved goodbye to his 20 inch ponytail in aid of a children’s cancer charity and Dr Hadwen Trust.

Mark Edmonds, who until Saturday (April 2) boasted waist-length curly hair, brought a party atmosphere to the High Street when he allowed hairdresser and proprietor of the Barber Shop, Paul Lennard, to shave off his hair and beard in front of some 60 well-wishers.

The 49-year-old, who has been delivering post to the good people of Alcester for the last seven years, made the decision to say farewell to his hair for reasons very close to his heart.

Mark’s wife Susan is currently fighting breast cancer and has unfortunately lost her hair following her treatment.

He added: “We’re always conscious of how we look to others and I want to stand shoulder to shoulder with Susan and support her.”

And the loving husband realised it was a way to not only support his wife but to raise money for the cause and to help make a child who is fighting the disease smile.

So far Mark has raised around £1,300 for the Dr Hadwen Trust, the UK’s leading non-animal medical research charity, and has donated his tumbling tresses to the Little Princess Trust which provides real hair wigs, free of charge, to children across the UK and Ireland who have lost their own hair due to lifesaving treatment.

Speaking after the event, Mark said it had been ‘weird’ getting used to life without his hair and joked the experience was like ‘losing a limb’.
