What are PCCs?
PCCs are elected to hold the police to account for delivering the kind of policing you want to see. Their aim is to cut crime and to ensure your police force is effective. They are there to ensure the policing needs of the public are met as effectively as possible and to oversee how crime is tackled by the police.
They bring a public voice to policing and do this by:
1) Engaging with the public and victims of crime to help set police and crime plans;
2) Ensuring the police force budget is spent where it matters most; and
3) Appointing, and where necessary dismissing, the chief constable.
Polling cards notifying residents of the election are being sent out across the county by each local authority. These tell people where their polling station is and when they can vote, from 7am until 10pm on Thursday, May 5.
To be able to vote at these elections residents must either be on the electoral register or have applied to be so by Monday, April 18. Please contact the elections office at your local council to check you are on the electoral register at your current address.
Postal votes are available to any resident who is on the electoral register. These are especially useful for those that are unable to get to a polling station on polling day due to health reasons, or who are perhaps on holiday or working away.
All completed applications forms for postal votes must be submitted before 5pm on Tuesday, April 19 and you must be on the electoral register to apply.
