Studley dog owner faces court action after chicken slaughter

A STUDLEY woman has been left devastated after waking up to find dozens of her chickens had been killed by her neighbour’s dogs.

Vicky Morrison, of Watts Road, first found more than 30 of birds slaughtered on March 10, and called the police, but she said nothing was done. On April 11 another 29 of her animals were killed by the same pets, leaving several of the runs destroyed.

She called the police who she said told her it was a civil matter until she explained her livestock were worth thousands and she has lost about £500 a month income from selling the eggs.

“I am very upset,” she said “I have lost not only my business with its small income, but also all of my much loved birds.

“Waking up to it not just once but twice was horrible. At first of course I didn’t want the dogs put down or anything but now I just don’t know, they are so dangerous.

“I have cared for these birds since they were hatched. They all have names. They aren’t just property.”

Officers have visited the owner of the dogs and he was told to pay £1,000 in damages to Mrs Morrison which he refused to pay, despite the chickens having an estimated value of more than £2,000.

A man in his 50s has now been summonsed to court for having a dog dangerously out of control, two dogs on two occasions.

Mrs Morris said: “I am still not happy that it has taken so long and I have had to suffer the consequences twice, and nothing will bring my lovely birds back, but if I am financially able to restock and measures are taken to prevent the dogs being loose, hopefully I can move on.”
