SAMBOURNE and Coughton celebrations of the Queen’s birthday and village life over the past 90 years saw “an overwhelming generosity and community spirit”.

Last weekend (June 11-12) more than 600 people celebrated on the village green which was covered in red, white and blue while the Jubilee pub in Studley donated their staff and services to the event, with free soft drinks for the children and more than 450 bottles of beer for the adult guests to enjoy.

The event included an exhibition at the village hall and a street party while the Battle of Britain flight heading for the Vintage Gathering in Astwood Bank also buzzed the celebrations – plus a resident’s helicopter.

Chairman of the celebration committee, Phillip Bond said: “It has been absolutely phenomenal. We could not believe the turnout at the weekend and it just blew everybody away.

“Never in our wildest dreams did we anticipate the response – from the helicopter flyover, Spitfire, and horse procession, to our own inter-village tug of war – we smashed it.

“The history, Queen’s birthday and community spirit all came together to make something really special.

“We captured the mood of the two villages and I would like to thank everyone, including our sponsors, for their immense generosity.”
