A KIND-HEARTED pair of Alcester Town Councillors have donated £1,000 to the Aylesford Unit at Warwick Hospital.

Coun Clive Neal-Sturgess, who hung up his mayoral chains in May, chose the specialist cancer unit as his ‘Mayor’s charity’ after being diagnosed with cancer shortly before taking office and has been fund-raising with regular quiz nights and civic receptions ever since.

He said: “Being diagnosed with cancer was the worst day of my life but the care I have received at the Aylesford Unit has been fantastic.”

Coun Lennox Cumberbatch, is also receiving treatment for cancer so knows better than most what Clive has gone through.

“My own treatment at the Unit has been on-going for many months,” said the former mayor.

“The doctors, nurses, and all staff have been tremendous, helpful, caring and prepared at all times to offer a significant amount of support to both patients and carers… What a team.”

Lennox and the Town Crier of Alcester, David Parkes, held a gentlemen’s dinner to raise money, with former Arsenal, Celtic and Wales striker John Hartson invited as a special guest speaker.

Having beaten cancer himself Hartson donated two signed shirts to be auctioned at the event in support of the good cause.

£500 from the dinner event has been donated to the Aylesford Unit and the total funds will be put toward a new scalp cooling machine which can help reduce hair loss caused by chemotherapy.
