Studley man ordered to pay after dog slaughters dozens of chickens

A STUDLEY woman is relieved the owner of a dog, which killed dozens of her beloved chickens, has been brought to justice, and ordered to pay nearly £2,000 in compensation by magistrates.

Vicky Morrison, of Watts Road, was left devastated when 59 of her birds were killed by a Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla dog belonging to Kevin Picken in March and April of this year.

“I was very upset,” she said “I lost not only my business with its small income, but also all of my much loved birds.”

On March 10, 30 of Mary’s birds were attacked and on April 11 another 29 of her animals were killed by the same pets, leaving several of the runs destroyed.

At Coventry and Warwickshire Magistrates Court last month (August 15) Picken, 57, was found guilty of being the owner of a dog which worried livestock, namely chickens, on agricultural land in Studley and ordered to pay £1,920 in compensation and £620 to Crown Prosecution Sevice to cover costs.

Vicky, who had cared for the birds since they were chicks, said: “I am pleased that he now has to take responsibility for the damage his dogs have done.

“Hopefully now he will take the necessary precautions to ensure his dogs do not escape again.”
