RUNNERS at Arrow Valley park celebrated the 12th national parkrun anniversary last weekend with MP Karen Lumley on standby for support.

On Saturday (October 1) Mrs Lumley turned up early to fire the starting pistol for the 12th anniversary parkrun and wished the runners well in their endeavors.

The Arrow Valley event is one of more than 900 parkruns that take place every weekend around the world and each is co-ordinated entirely by volunteers from the local community, and open to anyone who wants to take part.

Arrow Valley parkrun has just celebrated its own 4th anniversary and from welcoming 60 runners each week at its beginning, the event now has approximately 400 runners and a friendly reputation.

Mrs Lumley said: “I cannot help admiring those who get up early every Saturday to take part in the parkruns. It is commendable that so many people now turn up and are helping to make us a fitter nation.”

Parkruns are free, weekly, timed events, which are accessible to runners and walkers of all ages and abilities and which aim to encourage more people to take part in regular physical activity and volunteering, and to make the world a happier and healthier place.
