THE Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust’s Board has approved recommendations to proceed with implementing a new model for its services supporting adults with mental health issues.
The model was developed following widespread engagement with services users, families/carers and staff and the proposals which were out for consultation over the summer suggested a shift to a more community-based service allowing people to maintain control and independence, and reducing the risk of people needing to be admitted to a mental health ward.
The new model will see improvements to services which provide mental health support in the community.
This is where mental health professionals treat people at home or in their local community to help prevent issues escalating into a crisis, and support someone after they have been discharged.
The wards will change their function slightly to adopt an assessment approach, which means someone who can’t be cared for at home will be admitted to Holt Ward in Worcester for initial 7-day support and assessment with the aim of them being discharged back home quickly.
Those who require more intensive help will be transferred to Hill Crest in Redditch to continue their recovery.
