A NEW campaign has been launched this week, encouraging Studley residents to ditch their cars and travel on foot to shop.
Following the news that Studley High Street will be closed for major road re-surfacing work over the half term school break from October 23-30, the Studley in Business group has launched the ‘Studley is Open’ campaign to put a positive spin on what has been perceived as a blow for shop and business owners.
The thoroughfare will be shut from Crooks Lane to the Barley Mow island and diversions will be in place, however there will be limited access for residents and delivery vehicles, and pedestrians will be able to reach shops and businesses as usual.
Studley in Businesses will be providing information on parking, offers from local shops and a general message to residents to leave the car at home and use the opportunity to walk into Studley and support local shops.
A spokesperson said: “We understand that some of the high street businesses are expressing their anger and disappointment at the road being closed, but we’d like to take something positive from this, and encourage people to make the effort to support local business and the local economy.”
Traders received a letter from the council informing them of the planned closure around three weeks ago and County councillor Clive Rickhards (Studley, Lib Dem) and district councillor Justin Kerridge (Con, Studley & Mappleborough Green) met with local business leaders to explain the situation.
“There will be partial access and some parking down Marble Alley for customers at that end of the High Street and we’ve tried to facilitate deliveries to shopkeepers,” said Coun Rickhards.
“The work had to be done at some point and they’ve chosen half term deliberately been to try and lessen the impact of the work.”
The aim is to entirely remove the existing road surface and replace it with new tarmac as well as dealing with some of the drains and ironwork in the road.
