A REDDITCH woman with a powerful voice and a tireless work ethic is taking to the stage at the Palace Theatre next week to share the story of a British legend.
Barni Scott, who has lived in Redditch and Studley her whole life, will be stepping on stage next Thursday (November 3) taking audiences on a musical journey through the life and career of Dame Shirley Bassey.
The Shirley Bassey Story charts the life of Shirley Veronica Bassey, from her birth in Cardiff’s Tiger Bay in 1937 to her first job in a sausage factory, through family life and on to international stardom, screen debuts, awards and accolades, before becoming a Dame.
Now Barni, combining her performance and writing skills in response to regular requests from audience members, has brought the stage show to life.
“I would constantly get people asking for me to perform Dame Shirley’s hits so I thought – why not make a whole show out of it?” said the songstress, who lives in Studley.
“My mum had the Bassey albums and I would listen to them and learn all the words from the age of about three.
“She’s an incredible artist and knows exactly what suits her vocal style – something I believe really inspires how I work,” she said.
Developing a career as a vocalist, Barni has won multiple awards and supported many artists on the cabaret circuit as well as becoming a mum and earning herself a First Class Honours Degree in English and Drama.
In her latest show, the singer aims to recreate the power, passion and glitz of Dame Shirley and take audiences through her career from her first UK hit singles, Banana Boat Song, right through the James Bond years with Goldfinger and Diamonds Are Forever.
Alongside a cast of musicians, she will also explore Bassey songs from musicals and hits by The Beatles, Tom Jones and The Carpenters and hopes to wow the crowds with renditions of the show-stopping Big Spender and This Is My Life.
Barni who grew up in Winyates added: “I am really excited to be performing at the Palace and I know the audience are going to love hearing the Dame Shirley classics from a local girl.”
The show is suitable for all ages and tickets at £17.50 inclusive of booking fee are available from the Box Office on 01527 65203 or at http://tinyurl.com/zmkc54a
