PET owners are urged to think of their fury friends this Bonfire night as whilst firework displays are enjoyed by people, for most pets, they can be terrifying.
Statistics suggest that around 80% of dogs, cats, rabbits and guinea pigs have a phobia of fireworks and the loud bangs and sudden flashes of light can cause fear, panic and distress for animal.
Dr Huw Stacey, director of clinical services at Vets4Pets, said: “Firework noise can reach up to 150 decibels, which is as loud as a jet engine, so it’s not surprising pets find this distressing and confusing.
“Animals can easily become distressed, but there are simple and effective ways to reduce anxiety in pets during firework season.”
Vets recommend bringing all pets indoors, closing all windows, curtains and blinds, and providing plenty of toys and small spaces for animals to hide.
Turning on the radio or TV to drown out noise is effective and giving pets plenty of attention to comfort them can be very calming.
People are also advised not to react to the fireworks as this can cause pets to think something is wrong.
