A look back at Redditch's entertaining history

Ross Crawford 12th Nov, 2016   0

STEP back in time for a glimpse of what was hot in yesteryear with ‘Entertaining Redditch’ the latest talk from Redditch Local History Society.

Based upon research by Jillian Coombes using among others, the British Library’s ‘The British Newspaper Archive’ site, it traces how Redditch residents were entertained from the 1840s through to the end of the 20th century.

The presentation uses newspaper clips, maps and photographs to look at the growth of different venues in the town and the types of shows and artists who appeared at them.

Following a review of the circus troupes who regularly visited the town, it next looks at how moving pictures and purpose-built cinemas became an alternative to live entertainment in the 1900s.

The talk is at 2pm on Monday, November 14 in Redditch Library. Non-RLHS members are welcome for which there is a £2 entrance fee.

Refreshments will be available after the talk.
