REDDITCH MP Karen Lumley has welcomed the Government’s announcement on its preferred route for High Speed 2.
The announcement from the Secretary of State for Transport Chris Grayling MP, should bring bring jobs and support prosperity in the West Midlands by doubling the number of trains per hour coming in and out of Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds, while nearly trebling the number of intercity seats.
His statement included an announcement of a £900 million contract awarded for preparatory work on the London to West Midlands route.
Mrs Lumley believes HS2 will subsequently provide a significant boost to the Midlands ‘Engine’ strategy of which Redditch will be a key part.
“The essential modernisation of the railway system brings exciting opportunities for Redditch by providing more, and higher quality jobs, and greater connectivity both North and South,” she said.
“I am absolutely clear an outdated rail system cannot support modern growth, which is why I support the government’s plans for HS2.
“Both businesses and residents in Redditch stand to benefit from a quicker, more frequent and less congested rail system. I will continue to ask parliamentary questions to make sure HS2 delivers the best possible outcomes for Redditch and the West Midlands.”
