HEARTBROKEN pupils said a fond farewell to much loved lollipop lady Ruby Urka who, at the age of 84, is hanging up her lollipop for good after 47 years of service.

Ruby, who has been a regular feature in the life of children attending Ipsley RSA Academy in Winyates for 23 years, will say goodbye tomorrow (Friday, December 16) to an assembly of youngsters.

The bubbly Scot started out on her career as a crossing patrol officer with Holyoakes School before transferring to Ipsley and Winyates, where she lives.

“I haven’t made any plans about my retirement yet, but I know I will miss the children very much,” said Ruby, who has been on regular duty on Winyates Way come rain or shine.

And despite stepping down she didn’t hesitate to recommend the job: “It’s lovely to see the pupils and if you love children you will love this job,” she said.

School business manager Bryan Tait added: “Ruby has been a very important part of the school community for so many years – she will be greatly missed by everyone and we wish her a very happy retirement.”
