A Redditch bake-off competition – complete with ‘celebrity’ judges – has helped raise hundreds of pounds for charity.
The Great Redditch Bake-off, organised by Mayor Joe Baker, explained how he was looking for a slightly different way to raise money for charity and decided upon the Great Redditch Bake Off as a way to bring the community together again – this time united in their love for cakes.
Staff from the Town Hall and members of the public were invited to enter their finest cakes and 18 bakes were entered for judging and after the Mayor approached leader of Bromsgrove District Council, Caroline Spencer to be a ‘Mary Berry’ style judge, Darren Whitney, from Redditch Borough Council was happy to get on board to fill the ‘Paul Hollywood’ role.
The pair got well and truly into their roles, trying every single cake entry and critiquing it on look, texture, flavour and originality and a Christmas igloo cake was crowned the winner before the cakes were portioned up and sold to members of staff at the town hall.
Mayor Baker said: “It was great fun and both ‘Mary’ and ‘Paul’ really got into the spirit of things.
“it was nice to take part in something different because my Mayoral year is all about doing things differently.”
The bake-off, in conjunction with the Mayor’s quiz, raised £565 for chosen charities the Samaritans, the Redditch-based Mental Health Action Group, and the Craig and Charlotte Saving Hearts Foundation.
Mayor Baker added:”It was great to host the Great Redditch Bake Off and it was a great night with a full attendance. I would like to thank all who got involved.”
