A PASSIONATE student midwife from Redditch is seeking support to help fund a life-changing trip to Tanzania.
Samantha Wilkinson, who lives in Southcrest, is looking to raise £2,800 to help her fund the trip as part of her midwifery degree and make a difference to those living in a country that has a desperate need for midwives.
The money raised will help fund accommodation, flights, hospital placement, visa and vaccinations for Sam as she works in a referral hospital and a smaller regional hospital, assisting in delivery, obstetrics and gynaecology, neonatal care, and intensive care.
For the valuable training essential to her studies in complex midwifery care, the second-year Birmingham City University student hopes to be travelling to Dar es Salaam, the largest city in Tanzania, for the work placement in July.
Sam, aged 27, said: “Working with professionals in another country will give me the opportunity to experience how healthcare is delivered in an under-resourced and contrasting environment, contributing to both my personal and professional development.
“Working in a developing country is an amazing opportunity to use and share my skills whilst gaining experience working with illnesses that are rare in the Western world.
“This work placement is a once in a lifetime opportunity and an invaluable experience. I will hopefully make a huge impact on the women’s experiences and will be able to utilise the skills I gain throughout my career as a midwife,” she added.
“It’s going to be life changing and I can’t wait.”
Sam is fundraising with bake-sales and raffles, but is hoping others who are able will give generously to help her fulfill her dream of becoming a midwife.
