Going flat out to have some fun with Alcester pancake race

THE damp weather did not deter those wanting to flip their way across the finish line at Alcester’s annual Pancake Day Race this week.

Shrove Tuesday (February 28) panned out well in Alcester as adults and children alike raced along the market town’s street – frying pan firmly in hand as part of the town’s annual pancake races.

Hundreds of people lined the High Street to cheer on family and friends taking part and everyone pounded the tarmac with a frying pan, complete with pancake, in hand in a bid to be crowned the winners.

All participants were given a prize on completing the race and those who managed to cross the finish line the fastest were rewarded with certificates and chocolate Easter eggs from the High Bailiff.

Ian Whitehead, High Bailiff of Alcester, said: “For more than 50 years we have been running this race in the town and it is great to keep this tradition going regardless of the weather.

“Everyone seemed to enjoy it and it was fantastic to see the children running around as fast as they could. It’s good to see so much support from parents and teachers too.”

The event, sponsored by Simply Fresh, Sanders and Sanders, Forest of Arden Food Festival, HPF Energy and Seko Tools, had a team of more than 20 volunteers behind it.

Mr Whitehead added: “It’s wonderful when the whole town pulls together for events like this. It’s the best part of my job.”

The event was the 53rd of its kind organised by Alcester Court Leet.
