REDDITCH has been earmarked £5 million to support the development of new homes and ‘unlock commercial activity’ in the town centre.
The cash has been made available under the Midlands Engine Strategy announced by the Chancellor of the Exchequer Philip Hammond in last week’s budget and is part of a £392million investment in the Midlands as a whole.
The aim is to boost jobs, productivity and close the skills gap in the region as well as enhance transport links and the cultural offering of the area.
Other plans include a £7.5 million investment to improve the A38 at Bromsgrove to speed up journey times and accelerate delivery of homes and jobs.
Mr Hammond said: “The launch of the Midlands Engine Strategy is a demonstration of the government’s commitment to making the Midlands a powerful engine for economic growth.
“Stretching from Shropshire to Lincolnshire, with the M1, M6, and most of our major railway lines running through it, the Midlands sits at the very heart of the UK economy. The Midlands is essential to our national economic success….but there’s more that we can do to harness the region’s potential to help deliver the future we want for our country.”
The government has pledged to deliver ‘high quality housing at a reasonable price, and more widely to ensure that the Midlands has a vibrant cultural offer for both its residents and its tourists.’
