Volunteers return historic Redditch lane to its former glory

A LOCAL volunteer group has been busy restoring an historic Redditch lane to its former glory.

The Midweek Conservation Volunteer Group, which is supported by Redditch borough council, has spent the winter months doing a project at Bordesley Abbey Meadows to restore a remnant track which exists near to the Park Way bus route in Abbeydale.

Once part of Easemore Lane – now known as Easemore Road – the disused lane was allowed to grow over and hedges on either side had made it unpassable for many years. However, it is clearly visible as a working lane on the Ordnance Survey Map of 1903.

Volunteers from the group worked throughout the winter to remove scrubby growth and restore the hedges on either side using traditional hedge laying skills and farming methods.

Pete Burton from the Midweek Conservation Volunteer Group, said: “Hedgerows are a quintessential part of the British countryside and it’s great to keep this tradition alive.”

Martin Lewis, parks and green space development officer, said: “The Midweek Conservation Volunteering group have been working in Redditch’s Parks and open spaces for 25 years and are a very valuable group in the community. We are proud to help them with their conservation, restoration and preservation of wildlife and countryside around the borough and are truly grateful for the work they do. We congratulate them on their diligent and selfless contributions to the community.”

This year, three of the volunteers celebrate their 20th year contributing roughly 15,480 hours to the group’s projects.
