Redditch pupils get a taste of the great outdoors in brand new greenhouse

GREEN-FINGERED children at a Redditch school are planning some planting for this year’s RHS Malvern Spring Festival in their new heated greenhouse.

The pupils at Beoley First School grew numerous plants from seed last year and showed their results at the Malvern show. However, once their plants grew bigger, a new, larger space was needed to house their produce.

The new greenhouse, which was unveiled after many months of hard fund-raising, will be used by youngsters as part of their outdoor education programme where they learn to grow plants, fruit and vegetables as well as enjoying being outdoors in the fresh air.

Thanks to support from businesses including Oakland International, who gave money to help purchase the greenhouse, Total BGS who helped with the electrics, CET Redditch who provided the electrical materials and Attwell Farm who dug out the foundations and laid hardcore, the new facility can be used all year round.

Parents and grandparents of pupils at the school also dug deep and helped lay slabs and erect the greenhouse itself.

Katie Sweeney, deputy headteacher, said “The greenhouse is an incredible asset to the school and has enhanced the many outdoor activities that the children participate in.

“We are an eco-friendly school and our children love growing and using their own plants, fruits and vegetables.”

Students from Beoley are looking forward to again taking part in the Malvern Spring Festival in May, this time with a specially designed space-themed garden.
