Success as authority sees sense in Nine Days Lane junction protest

RESIDENTS on Wire Hill are celebrating after successfully campaigning to retain their right of way in the light of a new development behind the Alexandra Hospital.

Locals were horrified to discover late last year that plans to build 131 new homes and offices behind the Woodrow Drive hospital would see them having to give way to traffic coming from the site and onto Nine Days Lane.

Wire Hill is a steep slope and residents were quick to point out that forcing them to give way to traffic coming from the new David Wilson Homes development could cause accidents, particularly when the weather was bad.

They quickly formed a residents association under chairman Bob Price and started lobbying to get the change of priority reversed.

Last week came the news they had been waiting for – the development of a new road layout featuring ‘a build out’ from the site to slow the traffic prior to it joining Nine Day Lane.

Mr Price welcomed the news and said it was a victory for commonsense: “The thing was there had been no consultation from the highways authority (Worcestershire county council) – the only consultation was on the development itself, not the change of priority, and we only had two to three weeks to react when it came out.

“If they had consulted with local residents then all this could have been prevented.

“The highways authority seemed to have little regard for the 300 plus residents on Wire Hill – as far as we were concerned it was a roads safety issue and at the end of the day they have seen sense.”
