STUDENTS from Woodfield Middle School created recipes from across the globe as they battled it out for the title of ‘Year 7 Chef of the Year 2017’.

The competition started in March when students were asked to sign up.

Students were asked to design a three-course menu inspired by a country of their choice, as an ‘audition’. The final seven were selected from these menus and students invited to take part in after school workshops to help prepare them for the final.

On the day each made their chosen menus and then laid the table, presenting their meals with homemade menus and props for the judges.

Various members of staff took part in the judging as well as two student judges.

Meals were judged on taste, presentation and how well they had met the brief.

The overall winner was Maja Skuza, who created a Polish-inspired menu featuring a stuffed aubergine starter and a chicken main stuffed with bacon and served with new potatoes and a homemade coleslaw. Her dessert was a layered Polish ‘bird’s milk’ similar to Angel Delight topped with sprinkles, a strawberry garnish and some wafers.

Second was Megan Rowley, who created a Mexican menu with Lucy Greetham bringing the flavours of Italy to the table in third.

Teacher Gemma Lawrence said: “All of the Year 7 participants took their table presentation very seriously and produced a beautiful and impressive collection of meals.”

All participants were awarded an outstanding star as well as a personalised wooden spoon and certificate.

Maja also received a gift voucher, Megan received a Mexican cookbook and Lucy an Italian cookbook.
