THE Roman Museum in Alcester celebrated its first birthday last Thursday (April 13) bringing together both local dignitaries and members of the public to mark the occasion.
Representatives of the Warwickshire library service, Alcester town council and the museum, plus guests including Lord Herford from Ragley Hall gathered for the anniversary of the re opening of Globe House, where the museum is located.
Laurence Thatcher, chairman of the Roman Museum, said: “The new partnership between the library, town council and ourselves is working very well, with increased visitor numbers and new, exciting exhibits.
“We have had visitors from across the country and even the USA, which is great for the town’s reputation.”
The museum is a charitable organisation which, although supported by the Arts Council, relies totally on donations and grants to make ends meet.
Alcester was founded by the Romans, who called it Alauna. A market town situated on Icknield Street, it started life as a fort before being widely expanded beyond its original walls in later centuries of the Roman Empire.
