Saddle up for the Recycle Race as the Tour Series comes to Redditch

Correspondent 8th May, 2017   0

CYCLING fans attending the first stage of the Tour Series in Redditch tomorrow (May 9) are invited to join the ‘Recycle Race’ and make Every Can Count whilst watching elite riders compete.

Redditch-based recycling programme, Every Can Counts is sponsoring cycling team, Drops, which is competing in the Tour Series.

The Drops team includes Alice Barnes, who was recently announced as member of Team GB and Annasley Park who recently joined from the GB Academy. The aim of the partnership is to encourage people to recycle drinks cans when they are ‘on the go.’

On race day, spectators are invited along to the Every Can Counts stand, in the ‘Promo Zone’ to combine their cycling and recycling skills in ‘The Recycle Race.’ The stand, next to St Stephen’s Church, will be open from 11am to 9pm.

This interactive game uses pedal power to move used cans around a recycling loop track. Participants can race against family and friends, with the opportunity to win prizes including a bike made from recycled cans.

The game promotes the messaging that the drinks can you recycle today could be recycled into a new can in 60 days and that aluminium is endlessly recyclable.

Every Can Counts – a programme run by the Aluminium Packaging Recycling Organisation (Alupro) – is supported by drink can manufacturers, recyclers and leading brands. The programme aims to enable and encourage drinks can recycling in all environments. This includes workplaces, universities and colleges, events such as music festivals – or when watching a cycling race!

Executive director of Alupro, Rick Hindley said: “More and more people are taking to their bikes and it’s important to protect the environment we ride in. The recycle race is a brand new interactive activity specifically designed for cycling events. Our aim is to make recycling fun whilst motivating people to recycle when out and about.

“Aluminium packaging can be recycled over and over again, so the can you recycle today could be on sale again as another can in just 60 days – or it could be turned into a car engine part, a mobile phone player or even a racing bike!”

Now a regular host of Britain’s leading domestic cycle race series, Redditch and Worcestershire have welcomed the Tour Series annually since 2012. For further information about the ‘Recycle Race’ visit www.everycancounts.co.uk.
