A BIG hearted veterinary nurse has been praised after she held up traffic to protect two swan and seven cygnets as they made their way along a busy road to a local pool.
John Stewart of Wychbold Swan Rescue Centre said Emma Gardiner head nurse at Southcrest Veterinary Surgery in Mount Pleasant, kept the swans safe from traffic until he got there to take them to Paper Mill Pool in Church Hill.
“It’s a great outcome for what could have been a disaster,” said John.
“The swans were on Paper Mill Drive in Church Hill just past the Oast House and were trying to get all the way down to Brooklyn’s Lane when they tried to cross the road.
Thanks to Emma and her friends they had a lucky escape.”
The drama unfolded on Tuesday at around 3pm when Emma, who’s worked at Southcrest for 14 years, was with her mum Carol and some friends as they drove along Paper Mill Drive.
“We saw the swans walking along the grass verge and followed them for a while,” said Emma.
“Then all of a sudden they decided to cross the road so I jumped out of the car and stopped the traffic while mum drove along with the hazard lights on.
“I called John and we stayed until he arrived to capture them to take them to the pool.”
