Redditch couples gearing up for Monte Carlo drive, all for a good cause

AN awesome-foursome from Redditch are gearing up to drive more than a thousand miles to raise money for two local charities.

Redditch residents Lesley and Steve Evans and Jayne and Pete Reynolds will be setting off on the 2017 Monte Carlo or Bust Banger Rally next month in their 20 year-old Saab convertible.

The group bought the car – in compliance with the rules of the race – for less than £500, and will be driving more than 1,100 miles to Monte Carlo to raise money for the Charlotte and Craig Saving Hearts Foundation (CCSHF) and the Lucie Southall Leukaemia Fund.

As well as getting people to sponsor their daring drive, the team have been covering the car in heart-shaped stickers with messages and logos of those people and businesses sponsoring them.

In preparation for the trip – and to raise even more money for their chosen charities – the friends have also organised a live music and hog roast night at Studley Road Social Club, this Saturday (May 13).

All proceeds from the £5 ticket price will go to the CCSHF and the Lucie Southall Leukaemia Fund, as Steve’s catering business will be providing the food, and Pete’s band the entertainment at the social club, who have given the use of the room free of charge.

Lesley said: “We’re all really looking forward to it. We’ve never done anything quite like this before and as this year is Pete’s 50th birthday, we thought we should take the plunge.

“Both the charities are very close to our hearts and we want to raise as much as we can. I would love to see a full house of people coming along to support us.”

The rally, held from June 1, challenges entrants to drive to Monte Carlo through France, Switzerland and Italy, all for charity and along the way taking part in activities competing for points and prizes.

The three-day crusade will see more than 100 British bangers visit Europe to experience roads with backdrops of sun, sea, sand and snow.
