A BRAND new art exhibition launches this week, showcasing photography and paintings from local children from The Kingfisher School.

The exhibition, in Walford Walk in the Kingfisher Shopping Centre, will run until this Friday (May 19) celebrating the final works of an art project that began last September.

The project, set up to engage students between the ages of 14-16, has given pupils the chance to appreciate various art and cultured experiences, exhibitions and theatre performances.

Every student who took part in the scheme will now be involved in the exhibition, open between 10am and 4pm every day this week, marking the final stage of the project before the students receive their Arts Award certificate.

In addition to the work on display, there will also be activities and performances throughout the week.

One pupil, as part of her involvement with the project has begun singing lessons and will be performing two songs with piano and acoustic guitar accompaniment tomorrow (Wednesday, MAY 17) at 11am.

Another student has published a book of short stories titled ‘The demon chronicles’ and a limited number of these are available to purchase on Amazon. He has also recorded himself reading two of the stories and these will also be available to purchase in the centre from Tuesday 16th May.

Mick Phelan, teacher at The Kingfisher School, said: “We’re thrilled to be finishing off a fantastic 12 months of learning with a celebratory exhibition at Kingfisher Shopping Centre this week.

“The students’ involvement and enthusiasm for this project has been outstanding, exceeding all our expectations. The scheme has been a massive success and their work is truly wonderful. We’re delighted to be able to give them the opportunity to showcase their hard work in centre this week for everyone to enjoy.”

Ken Williams, General Manager at Kingfisher Shopping Centre, added: “We’re delighted to have The Kingfisher School with us this week to celebrate the end of a successful 12 month project. The work we’ve seen so far is brilliant and we can’t wait to see it on display, we hope lots of people will come down and see it in all its glory.”

The Kingfisher School is a special school catering specifically for children who have found it difficult to access mainstream education. Students are taught in smaller groups and regularly encouraged to take part in extracurricular activities.
