A BRAND new suite of college facilities to support independent learning and inclusivity for those with Special Educational Needs (SEN) has been unveiled in Redditch.

Last week Heart of Worcestershire College (HoW College) officially opened the doors to their state-of-the-art SEN facilities, leading the way for SEN provision across Worcestershire thanks to £298,000 worth of investment from the Worcestershire Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP)

The brand new facilities, launched at the Redditch Peakman Street campus last Friday (May 12), were developed as part of a joint partnership project between the two organisations aiming to transform how local post-16 specialist education can be shaped to best meet the needs of young people and their parents.

Claire Heywood, Assistant Principal Inclusive and Employer Learning, said: “Here at Heart of Worcestershire College we’re absolutely delighted to have been able to transform our existing surroundings to accommodate these new facilities. The College is passionate about enhancing SEN provision and continuing to support our current and future cohort of learners.”

The facilities include a sensory room, a mocked up ‘flat’ to be used to support learners to develop independence skills, refurbished classroom areas and improved access to online facilities which support independent learning, in preparation for employment or living independently.

Mayor Joe Baker, who attended the grand opening, said: “It was lovely to be asked to attend the opening of the new centre at Heart of Worcestershire College.

It is so important that we recognise the wealth of talent that we have in our young people here in Redditch.

“This facility will only enhance their aspirations and their opportunities as I believe that every young adult, regardless of their circumstances, has the right to enjoy full access to education.”
