A 22-MILE walk from Worcester to Redditch to help forge friendships in the community has been hailed a success.
The guided walk along the canal developed in partnership with Redditch Ramblers Group saw around 30 people brave the unpredictable weather in support of Christian Aid.
Walkers met at Worcester Cathedral at around 7am and people were invited to join the group at various points en route so they could all finish together at St Stephen’s Church in Redditch for afternoon tea.
Walk leader John Legge, of St Peter’s Church in Redditch said: “We wanted to take in a beautiful stretch of countryside including the canals from Worcester to Redditch to raise funds as part of Christian Aid Week and that is exactly what we did.
“It was a fantastic turnout and there are too many people to fully thank for the success of the event, but the walkers all made a great effort raising money and the profile of the charity.
“It was a great success and we’re already looking forward to organising next year’s event.”
So far, the walk has raised almost £500 for Christian Aid which works to support sustainable development, stop poverty, support civil society and provide disaster relief all over the world.
John added: “It was an amazing day, despite the occasional deluge of rain.”
The Rev Paul Lawlor, Redditch town centre chaplain who also too part said: “I said a prayer at the cathedral both for our souls and our soles and I have to say the walk went well.w
“I always tend to accelerate when it gets a bit tougher, but after Stoke Prior on the way up to Tardebigge my goodness it got tricky, but we made it in the end.”
