THE UKIP candidate for Redditch in the forthcoming General Election has put forward an innovative plan to turn the Alexandra Hospital into a fully functioning ‘Municipal Hospital’.
Paul Swansborough said: “If elected as MP I will put forward a private members bill that would enable the people of Redditch to take back control of their hospital.
Where a specific hospital is failing to meet it’s targets and has been put into special measures by the Care Quality Commission for longer than twelve months, the Health Secretary should have the power to release it from the trust operating it and give it to a new publically owned, managed and accountable model known as a ‘Municipal Hospital’.”
He added that under the scheme Redditch borough council would set up an umbrella organisation to run the new hospital, appointing an oversight board of local councillors and doctors and key stakeholders.
“The financial director of the council would manage the accounting and payroll for the hospital.
“This will save the Municipal Hospital money. At the same time the council also benefits by receiving additional income from a new branch of shared services.
“The new model would abolish the use of expensive management consultants and focus on frontline patient care. This would free up much needed cash so the Alex could provide a full range of acute healthcare.”
