IN the wake of the tragic fire at Grenfell Tower in London, the Feckenham community have been rallying round to support the victims.

Mum Donna raised the idea of collecting for the victims and within just a few hours, donations of items came flooding in.

After talking to other parents on Wednesday morning, word spread throughout the community that something should be done to help those affected by the fire which took place in the 24-storey Grenfell Tower in Kensington. By the evening on the same day, more than 35 bags of emergency supplies had been donated.

With more items that could comfortably fit into her car, Donna managed to convince another kind local person to donate a van for her trip to London on Thursday.

Curate in the Wychebrook Group of parishes Rev Gary Crellin visited Donna on Thursday morning to help her pack the items ready to deliver to community centres in London.

He said: “It is a real testament to our community that we can help one another and help others in need. The donations arrived at Donna’s house and in a record time they were sorted and loaded.

“It is humbling to know that in the next 24 hours they will be in use – and I would like to give thanks for all those that could help in the time given.”

It has been confirmed that the fire has already killed at least 17 residents and more than 30 people remain in hospital.

The final number of casualties is unknown but looks set to rise as many people are yet to be accounted for.

The country has responded to the tragedy with generosity and since the news of the fire, £1.6million has been raised on fundraising website, JustGiving.
