A TRIO of Redditch friends are taking on a bike ride of more than three hundred miles to raise money to help fight leukaemia.
Simon Adams lost his brother Stephen to the disease last year and in a bid to raise money to help others fight and beat leukaemia, he and his friends Terry and Matthew Wilson have decided to take on a mammoth cycling trek next month.
On July 10 the childhood friends are planning to cycle more than 350 miles along the coast of Wales in aid of charity Bloodwise, a UK specialist blood cancer charity.
The charity offer information and support to anyone affected by leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and other blood cancer related disorders, as well as campaigning to raise awareness and funding life-saving research.
Simon, Stephen, and brothers Matthew and Terry, who all grew up together in Batchley, attempted a bike ride around Wales together in the mid 1990s and although it didn’t go very well, they had always planned to do it again.
Terry said: “We were going to do it again a few years after the original attempt, but things always ‘got in the way’ and we just never ended getting there.
“After Stephen sadly passed away, we decided almost immediately that we would do a sponsored ride in Wales to raise money for a blood cancer charity.
“We’re going to be revisiting fond memories of a teenage holiday in aid of the charity in Stephen’s memory.”
He added; “We’ve been doing some monster rides to prepare for this so I think we’ll be able to take whatever Wales throws at us.”
The group are all keen cyclists and have been training hard for the trip which will cover 357 miles in just five days.
Simon, who works for Cresser Cars in Redditch added: “It’s going to be a long journey, but we are definitely up for the challenge.”
The team are hoping to raise at least £2,000 for the cause and still have a fair way to go before they hit this target.
