A COMMMUNITY project aiming to improve the lives of Redditch lads has been given a funding boost of almost £9,000.
The Dads&Lads project is a new venture run by Redditch outreach group Boys2Men, which encourages fathers and sons to bond through activities completed together.
The Awards for All Big Lottery funding of £8,820.10 will allow the group to launch Dads&Lads, a series of interactive sessions at local schools for boys aged seven and eight.
Boys2Men director Phil Williams said: “The project really began around nine years ago when we found there was a real lack of strong male role models for youngsters in Redditch. It was having a detrimental impact not only individual boys, but families, schools and the wider community too.
“At Boys2Men we are nurturing lads by empowering dads. We give them the space and facilities to spend quality time together where they can learn and develop a positive relationship.”
As part of the scheme, boys identified as having low self-esteem or who could benefit from a strong male role model are invited with to attend the free six-week course.
One evening a week, the father-son duos work on junk modeling projects together – whether making a bottle-rocket or a racing car or simply playing games.
Using only junk and recycling materials, the boys and dads can learn simple, practical skills.
“Boosting someone’s self-esteem and confidence has a knock-on effect to every aspect of their life,” added Phil.
“From school work and attendance, to other family relationships, having a strong connection with their dad, and the sense of achievement that comes from working with him as part of a team, always has positive results.
“The junk-modelling also aims to show the families that it doesn’t have to cost much money to enjoy time together. With a bit of creativity and imagination, you can create something worthwhile.”
