The only way is up for Redditch man Steve

BIG-hearted Steve Watson is a man on a mission as he gets in shape for a testing 10 mile romp across the Malvern Hills.

Steve and his wife Janice tragically lost both their parents to heart disease and now the local couple are stepping out for a sponsored walk in aid of the British Heart Foundation.

In the process they not only hope to raise a lot of money for a good cause but also give their own hearts a boost by losing a few pounds along the way.

“My wife lost her Dad a few months back and we wanted to do something as a result,” said Steve, who works at Huntleys funeral directors.

“Our daughter thought was a good idea and got us the information pack and that was that – we were doing it.”

It’s going to be a tough challenge too. Steve and Janice have lost six stone between them but Steve still tips the scales at 17st 10lbs and would like to get down to 16st.

He’s also never been to the Malvern Hills before and his scant idea of what awaits him.

“I’ve walked around the Lickey Hills, and we do a bit of walking around Redditch, but nothing like this,” said the 55 year-old.

However the Woodrow couple’s determination has won support and sponsorship from both staff at Huntleys and Morrisons where Janice works.

And the hope is it will give the couple a template to keep on walking their way to fitness.

“We are getting on our bikes and I’m on the treadmill at home nearly every evening so no, it’s not going to stop here, we’re going to keep on going,” said Steve.
