Redditch photo competition is picture of success

A PHOTOGRAPHY competition born out of raising the profile of a local club has uncovered a wealth of potential in the town.

Conceived by Webheath Digital Photographic Club and organised by their secretary Dennis Moore with input from town centre chaplain Paul Lawlor, the aim was to explore the spiritual journey from ‘field to factory’ in Redditch.

The result was a stunning exhibition featuring 78 prints and 108 digital images which last week was put on display in a vacant shop unit in the Kingfisher Centre.

There it attracted widespread admiration from local shoppers, many of whom were so impressed they dug into their pockets to buy prints of the pictures on show.

One key visitor was the management team of the Kingfisher Centre itself, with the resulting possibility of the creation of a ‘photo wall’ in the centre to showcase the work of local photographers.

In addition the potential for schools to get involved in next year’s competition was also raised.

Organiser Mr Moore said: “I’m chuffed to bits; it’s the first time we have ever done anything life this and so much came out of it – all told it’s been a roaring success.”

The final judging came down to the Rev Lawlor and Redditch Standard editor Ross Crawford who awarded the print prize to Graham Bastock for his stunning picture of Tardebigge Church just as the stars were coming out.

The digital prize went to Sandra Harffey for her picture of St Stephen’s seen from the ruins of Bordesley Abbey.

Borough Mayor Jenny Wheeler presented the winners with their trophies last Saturday morning.
