A CONVOY of more than a hundred bikers rallied round to escort a young Redditch carer to his school leavers prom last week.

Wesley Downes, who is in Year 8 at Woodfield Academy, supports his mum Kayleigh in caring for his 10-year-old sister Jaiden, who has complex special needs.

The quiet-natured and caring 12 year-old had been put him off joining his classmates at his leaving prom on July 20, but his mum was determined to see him go and enjoy himself.

With the help of family and friends, Wesley was convinced to ride into the prom on a motorbike – and a Facebook appeal soon ensured he was given a day to really remember.

Mum Kayleigh, aged 30, said: “He’s been a bit down in the dumps lately and did not want to go to the prom.

“His sister has complex special needs and she can be a real challenge – he loves her to bits but it impacts him a lot.

“I had a think about a way to make the prom special for him and suggested him going on a motorbike with my friend and he was really into it.”

Community spirit saw more than 100 bikers join the convoy, which started at McDonalds in Moons Moat, to ensure Wesley and classmate Josh arrived at the prom in style.

Kayleigh added: “It was unreal. We could not have anticipated how many people were going to turn up.

“The community spirit has been amazing. Wesley is a quiet kid but he was really overwhelmed. It was wonderful to see.”
