YOUNG people from Matchborough had a special treat last week when they were visited by WBA Super flyweight World Champion Kal Yafai.
Yafai was in town to visit Redditch Borough Council’s Active Kitchen project.
The world champion spent time discussing his career and dedication to his sport with the young people who had signed up to the project.
They were then treated to some boxing training with the champion as Yafai donned the pads.
Club and coach development officer Chris Wells said: “Feedback from the project has been really positive.
“This was a great chance to provide the young people with motivation from an inspirational role model, who is proof of what can be achieved through belief and hard work.
“Everyone really enjoyed themselves; they learned some new skills, made new friends and were guaranteed two good meals each day.”
The Active Kitchen project was run by the council’s sports development team in partnership with West Mercia Police and the PAZ Youth Centre and provided young people two hours of sport and a healthy hot meal every day.
This latest, five day Active Kitchen club comes after a successful pilot project took place for three days during the Easter Holidays.
The Active Kitchen projects aim to help families who might struggle to entertain and feed their children over the holiday period.
