BOROUGH Mayor Jenny Wheeler got first hand experience of sight loss when she helped Redditch Lions promote World Sight Day.
The Lions have joined the global crusade to prevent blindness by raising awareness of sight preservation.
And on Thursday they were in Millward Square in the Kingfisher passing on the message to shoppers.
“It is estimated 40million people around the world are blind,” said Brian Rich of Redditch Lions.
“On World Sight Day, we are working with Lions clubs around the world to educate people on the importance of proper eye health care.”
On a worldwide scale, an estimated 75 percent of all blindness is found in Africa and Asia with an estimated 500,000 new cases of cataracts each year in Africa, of which only one in ten is operated upon.
In India, 80 per cent of the blind suffer from cataracts, with more than 3.8million new cases reported each year.
