Hollberrow Green: home to soldiers who fell in WWI

Redditch Editorial 15th Oct, 2017   0

JUST outside Inkberrow, at the corner of Morton Hall Lane and the main road through Holberrow Green, is the village war memorial, an oak tree surrounded by an oak seat.

Opposite is Oak Tree Cottage the home, 100 years ago, of Thomas and Jessie Ganderton and their family of 12 children.

Thomas Henry Ganderton, born in 1895 served with the 2nd Battalion Worcestershire Regiment and died on The Somme on July 10, 2016.

Also nearby is Manor Farm, once the home Archibald and Annie Farquhar.

Their son John, born in 1897 served with the 11th Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment and was killed at Polygon Wood in the Battle of Passchendaele on October 9, 1917.

The tree was planted as a memorial to John, Thomas Ganderton and the other Holberrow Green men who fell in WWI.

Selected by John’s younger brother Patrick, the sapling was lifted from a nearby wood by Morton Hall gardeners Tom Ganderton and Herbert Tomlinson and was planted in 1919.

The original seat (donated by Victor Parry, late of the Post Office in the village) was replaced in 2011.
