Red tape is a real game changer for bingo fans

TIME has been called on Bingo nights enjoyed by dozens of Redditch senior citizens – after they accidentally fell foul of the law.

Residents of Harry Taylor House in Lakeside have been happily playing Bingo every Friday night for the past 38 years, but now they’ve been told they cannot play for prize money any more.

The group of Bingo-lovers who live in the council-owned retirement flats meet on Friday evenings to play for small cash prizes – only under the Private Gaming Law this is not allowed.

Once this was brought to the council’s attention, an officer stepped and brought the gambling – for £1 stakes – to a halt.

A council spokesperson said: “We have not cancelled any social gatherings at Harry Taylor house and appreciate this is a long-standing tradition which we would not wish to negate.

“What we have asked is that residents do not play Bingo for cash prizes as they may not be conforming to the law.

“The Gambling Act 2005 makes it clear you cannot charge for participation in the game and in turn the prizes cannot be made up of monies paid to participate.

“We have made contact with a number of groups, as well as Harry Taylor House, to explain the situation but unfortunately some of the groups have decided not to continue as a result – even though they can still play for fun.”

Roy Preen, who helps some of the residents with their errands, said: “Some of these people aren’t able to leave the house and socialise, so for them, this night of Bingo is all they have. It’s very important to them.

“It’s a great way to get together and look forward to at the end of the week, and it’s a great shame if they feel they have to stop.”

It is hoped the Bingo will continue with prizes, such as donated gifts, in line with law.

Research has shown that loneliness in older people can have a negative impact on health, and that communal activities, such as singing, group knitting, puzzles and playing games improve overall well-being among older and isolated people.
