A SIZEABLE crowd of people gathered at the Cenotaph in Plymouth Road on Saturday to mark Armistice Day.
As ever it was subtly different from the Remembrance Sunday parade with a quieter, more reflective air.
The service was led by town centre chaplain and Vicar of St Stephen’s the Reverend Paul Lawlor as the gathering marked 99 years since the guns fell silent on the Western Front at 11am on November 11, 1918.
Joining him were serving members of the armed forces, veterans and members of the Royal British Legion and leading dignitaries, including Borough Mayor Jenny Wheeler and Council Leader Bill Hartnett.
After the ceremony members were invited back to Redditch Rugby Club for a buffet organised by club stalwart Emily Shotbolt whose father served in the forces.
After being driven to the top of the drive of the Bromsgrove Club lone piper Robert Gardner played them down to the clubhouse where a buffet awaited them.
In the afternoon the visitors were able to stay and see a gallant Redditch side lose to the unbeaten league leaders Stoke Old Boys.
