DASH cams and sat navs left in plain view, handbags on back seats and letters showing names and addresses – these are just some of the things two Redditch police officers spotted on a cursory tour of local car parks.

And as they step up their patrols in the run-up to Christmas as part of ‘Operation Presence’ they are appealing to people to do more to protect themselves becoming victims of crime.

“If we can see these things so can a would be thief,” said PC Vicki Jones who is co-ordinating the campaign in Redditch.

“We’ll be writing to all the owners of cars where we see things like this left out in plain view and asking them to take steps to avoid crime.”

She hopes that more officers on patrol will act as a deterrent at what is the busiest time of the year for shoppers.

The Kingfisher Shopping Centre is likely to be packed with people, many will be carrying more money than usual and be buying gifts make them possible targets for thieves.

“There’s no hidden agenda here – we’re hoping our increased presence will help prevent crime and so everyone can have a safe and happy Christmas,” said PC Jones.

Police are urging shoppers to take care over Christmas. They say:

  • Carry your wallet in an inside pocket, preferably one that has a zip or a button closure.
  • Never put your wallet or purse in your back pocket.
  • Make sure your handbag is securely closed at all times and your purse is placed near the bottom of the bag.
  • Don’t leave purses, wallets or bags unattended for even a second.
  • At shop checkouts do not feel pressured to leave the counter until you have secured all your money, cards and goods, even if there is a big queue behind you.
  • Be aware of people standing near you at the cash point. Cover the number pad when you enter your PIN and put your money away safely before moving away from the machine. Never write your PIN number down.
