Baby wipes are the main culprit for blocked pipes

Redditch Editorial 18th Dec, 2017   0

A NEW report has found that 93 per cent of material causing blocked sewage pipes is baby wipes.

The findings, by Water UK also found less than one per cent of the domestic waste in sewage blockages were flushed items such as toilet paper.

And Water UK’s Director of Corporate Affairs Rae Stewart said everyone, including the people of Redditch, had a part to play in easing the problem.

“Water companies spend billions of pounds every year making our water and sewerage services world class, but our sewerage system is just not designed to handle things like baby wipes which don’t break down in water.”

New packaging featuring the ‘Do Not Flush’ message is expected to be rolled out on wet wipes and similar products by October 2018.
