NADHIM Zahawi, MP for Stratford, has been caught up in the scandal over the disgraced Presidents Club men-only fund raising gala dinner in London.
The club has been forced to close after an investigation by the Financial Times alleged hired hostesses had been sexually harassed and groped at the event, held last week.
Mr Zahawi, whose constituency includes Studley and Alcester, faced calls to resign as an education minister after he attended the dinner but failed to mention any concerns about what went on there.
The MP, whose remit covers families and children, only became a minister earlier this month.
He was summoned to Downing Street on Wednesday to explain his version of events to the Government’s Chief Whip Julian Smith where he was reportedly given ‘a dressing down’.
Prime Minister Theresa May had said she was appalled after hearing the tales of sexual harassment at the dinner, held at the Dorchester Hotel, and attended by some of the wealthiest men in the country.
Questions have been asked why Mr Zahawi, whose majority in Stratford is nearly 21,000, attended the dinner in the first place.
Meanwhile one of the recipients of money raised by the Presidents Club, the world famous Great Ormond Street Hospital for sick children, has returned hundreds of thousands of pounds donated by the organisation.
Speaking on Twitter the MP said he arrived at the dinner at 8.30pm but left at 9.35pm after feeling ‘uncomfortable’.
He said: “I did not see any of the horrific events reported by the FT. I am shocked by them and condemn them unequivocally”.
