A VETERAN from Redditch has been nominated for the Recognising Achievement Award at the upcoming Endeavour Fund Awards.
The awards recognise how he has best used his endeavour experience to promote and catalyse his recovery.
The annual Endeavour Fund Awards celebrate the achievements of wounded, injured and sick servicemen and women who have taken part in remarkable sporting and adventure challenges to help with their recovery and rehabilitation.
Alex Fogg will attend the awards ceremony in London next week, where the winners will be announced.
He will be joined by Prince Harry and his fiancee Meghan Markle who will be meeting the inspiring nominees as well as other Endeavour participants and supporters.
The Endeavour Fund is a project led by The Royal Foundation of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry.
It plays an important role in ensuring more servicemen and women have the opportunity to rediscover their self-belief and fighting spirit through physical challenges.
Alex spent six years with the Royal Engineers before he suffered a heart attack at the age of 25.
This unexpected exit from the Armed Forces was difficult for him to deal with and he struggled to find employment and ended up homeless.
However he soon got involved with Mission Motorsport, the Forces’ Motorsport Charity, which not only gave him an outlet for his passion for racing but provided him with opportunity to qualify in vehicle maintenance and repair.
It also helped arrange work experience with the Formula E team, Dragon Racing. His work was so impressive he was offered a job with them and completed a full season in Formula E.
Alex said: “Motor racing has given me a new life, the team spirit on the racing track is very similar to that of being part of the military and the sense of belonging has helped me hugely over the past year.
“This time last year I hit rock bottom and could not see a way out. However, with some great support from Mission Motorsport, I have managed to secure an amazing job and will soon be qualified, which has enabled me to develop a whole new and hugely exciting career. Unbelievable.”
David Wiseman, Head of Armed Forces Programmes at The Royal Foundation said: “These Awards are an opportunity to showcase and celebrate the achievements of a group of extraordinary individuals who have utilised support from the Endeavour Fund to excel across a range of sporting and adventurous challenges throughout 2017.”
