PUPILS from Ipsley RSA Academy were ‘flipping’ delighted after children’s charity the Oakland Foundation donated batter mix to all Year 5 students for Shrove Tuesday.

Not only that but they arranged a donation of pancakes care of May & Raeburn to help the school make this year’s Pancake Day a flippin’ marvellous success.

Foundation trustee, Hayley Smith, said: “We are so grateful to May & Raeburn and delighted to be able to once again support the school’s Pancake Day celebrations.

“Providing pupils with free pancake batter allows the school to take part in this annual celebration and helps explain the background and origins of Shrove Tuesday.”

Pancake Day or Shrove Tuesday, is the traditional day of feasting before Ash Wednesday, and the 40 days of Lent leading up to Easter.

Shrove Tuesday was traditionally a way of ‘clearing the cupboards’ before the Lenten fast and pancakes offered the perfect way of utilising these ingredients.

Like many traditions it had a practical purpose too as after the ravages of winter food was often in short supply and so fasting for Lent made a virtue out of a necessity.
