Odd socks fund raiser pulls in the pounds at Redditch Rugby Club

THERE was a riot of colour on the rugby pitch last Saturday as Redditch 2nd XV donned odd socks for a tough re-arranged fixture against local rivals Woodrush.

The occasion was to mark World Downs Syndrome Day and to support the charity’s Lots of Socks campaign.

Inspired, rugby mad father and son duo Jason and Harvey Habgood persuaded their second team colleagues to pull on odd socks to help the cause, which they did with brilliant bad taste in footwear.

The day was all the more poignant as the Habgood family’s youngest, Darcey, has Downs Syndrome.

Lucky then that having fun for a good cause was the main priority of the day as Woodrush Seconds, stepping in at the last minute, showed no mercy against an under-strength Redditch XV, racking up a 61-0 victory.

“We’d like to thank the whole team and all the supporters who contributed and the Woodrush lads too who fulfilled the fixture and also put some money in,” said Harvey.

In all, the team raised £105.20, not bad for an odd pair of socks.
