DAREDEVIL teddy bears took a leap of faith on Bank Holiday Monday – but it was all for a good cause.

The aim was to boost the funds for renovation work at St Nicholas Church in Alcester and scores of youngsters took the opportunity to send their bears aloft for a parachute jump from the top of the church tower or to take a flight on the zipwire biplane.

Delighted organiser Mike Newey said everything had gone to plan: “We did extremely well, the weather was beautiful and we made more than £540.

Everyone had a thoroughly good day.”

The bears, fitted with parachutes, were taken aloft in a basket a half dozen at a time where a team of volunteers sent them soaring from the top with the hope the chute would successfully open and bring them gently back down to earth.

The teddy bear zipwire biplane was also kept busy and Mike promised that next year it would be even better.

Meanwhile, inside the church a cork trail had youngsters searching for six different coloured corks with the reward of a bag of sweets for those who successfully completed the task.

Work on renovation of the north side of the church is due to start in August and with the appeal just £20,000 short of its target hopes are high all will be completed on time.
