MORE than 1,000 fish have been killed after pollution escaped into to a brook that feeds the River Arrow in Redditch.

The Environment Agency was alerted on Sunday following reports of dead fish in the Batchley Brook.

The watercourse runs from Hewell Grange to Batchley Pond then along the length of Windsor Road, under the Sainsbury’s Birmingham Road island to Forge Mill and from there into the Arrow, which joins the River Avon at Salford Priors.

The Arrow is a popular spot for anglers with clubs having regular spots along its length.

The Environment Agency acted immediately and attended the scene.

Officers managed to identify the source of the pollution and it was stopped but are carrying out tests in the area to try and gauge its impact on other wildlife.

A spokesperson said: “Unfortunately more than 1,000 fish have been killed.

“No other environmental impacts have yet been identified, but we are testing for any other impacts on aquatic life.

“Since the incident we have undertaken field tests and water samples and the pollution has passed through.

“We are now undertaking a full investigation into how the incident occurred and therefore we are unable to give any further details relating to it.”
