WEST Mercia Police has received almost 5,000 accidental and unintentional calls so far this year, a 27 per cent increase on the same number this time last year.
The majority of calls come from mobile phones being knocked in pockets or young children playing with phones so parents are being urged to think about how they carry their phones and keep them out of their children’s reach.
Even with silent calls, police still have to check there is no emergency and no-one is at risk so may have to send an officer that is not needed.
Anyone who does accidentally dial 999 should not panic, just stay on the line and confirm they are OK and don’t need the police.
